Unlike many other footballers, Ferran Torres’ main hardships did not come before football, but after he had already made it to the top.
At the age of 21, Torres had accomplished what many footballers would only dream about: a huge transfer from Valencia to Manchester City, a Premier League title, and then another huge transfer to Barcelona. While the public believed he had reached the pinnacle of his career, he internally had described himself as being in a “bottomless pit.”
Ferran Torres Garcia was born on February 29, 2000, in Foios, a small town just outside Valencia, Spain.
He grew up in a relatively stable household, and his family was very supportive of his footballing dreams. He joined Valencia’s youth academy at an early age, progressing through the amazing Spanish football system.
People close to him described him as quiet, disciplined, mature, and analytical. He would rarely try to be flamboyant or draw the media’s attention. Torres would climb the ranks, debuting for Valencia’s first team when he was only 17 years old. Within two seasons, he had solidified himself as one of Spain’s brightest talents. He would help Valencia win the 2019 Copa del Rey, beating Lionel Messi’s Barcelona, which caught the eyes of many of Europe’s biggest clubs.
In 2020, he would sign for Manchester City, where he developed very quickly. Everything changed in December of 2021, when he transferred to Barcelona. At Manchester City, Torres was not always guaranteed a starter position; however, after the transfer, all eyes were on him. Barcelona set crazy expectations for Torres, and he was seen as one of the players that would restore the world’s biggest club after Lionel Messi’s departure.
As soon as he joined, Torres would fracture his foot while playing for a sprain, disrupting his debut rhythm. Whenever he missed chances, fans were looking at one of the largest investments proving to be a mistake during Barcelona’s financial instability.
Spanish media criticized him for his inconsistent performance, lack of confidence, and missing chances. Because Torres rarely responded publicly, many assumed these comments did not affect them. In reality, everything was affecting him severely. Torres publicly admitted that 2022 was when he had reached his lowest point.
“I found myself in a bottomless pit, and I could not see a way out.”
Rather than suffering alone, Torres would make the important decision to seek out a sports psychologist. He later explained this was one of the best experiences, and he openly discussed it while still playing at the highest levels.
Gradually, Torres began to improve mentally and physically. Rather than portraying therapy as a last resort, he also normalized it as one of the first helping hands you should reach out for. Even when entering the 2026 World Cup, doubts still lingered about whether or not he would perform. After Spain’s opening match, he lost his place in the starting lineup. Against Saudi Arabia, the goal he scored that he hoped would regain his confidence was ruled offside, and it seemed like the confidence started slipping away once again.
However, when Spain reached the World Cup Final against Argentina, everything changed. Late in extra time, he would score the winning goal, making Spain the world champions. A player that once was mocked for missing chances had delivered the biggest finish in Spanish football, helping them get their 2nd World Cup.
Ferran Torres’ story is no longer about simplifying winning a World Cup-winning goal.
It was about proving that success does not make someone immune to self-doubt or anxiety. After years of describing himself as being in a “bottomless pit,” he reached the highest moment the sport could offer. For many athletes, his story demonstrates that asking for help is not the opposite of strength, but the beginning of finding it again.
